04 January 2018: Team effort keeps local pre-school open after devastating fire

Our Housing team in Plymouth recently took time out of the office to lend a helping hand to Jack and Jill’s pre-school nursery situated within the military housing estate of Eggbuckland. Lots of children attend the nursery, not just from Eggbuckland but from Plymouth and Torpoint too, so it’s a really important facility for local Service families.

Earlier this year, the pre-school caught fire and suffered irreparable damage mainly to the conservatory that is attached to the back of the building. CA and DIO teams worked together to source a replacement conservatory and, after helping to temporarily relocate the children to an alternative area, our team were able to clean the smoke damaged rooms and get them prepared for painting and new carpets the following week.

Alex Callister, our Local Customer Service Advisor in Plymouth and a Service wife, helped to co-ordinate the project and said “Without this joint collaboration, the pre-school would have closed, having a huge impact on the military families within the area. This community project was a personal one for me as my children attended the pre-school which was a massive part of their lives before starting school.

Jo Jenkins, Area Co-ordinator of the Royal Naval Pre-school Learning Organisation added “The fire was devastating for the children, families and the staff at Jack and Jill’s pre-school and charity. The replacement conservatory, the clean-up and the redecoration of the downstairs playrooms has been outstanding. A special thanks to Alex and the CA team for being there in our time of need and enabling us to continue to provide support and childcare for Service families.”
