22 February 2018: CarillionAmey, DIO and Roberts Rice Contractors Ltd upgrade homes in the South West

We are working with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and supply chain partners, Roberts Rice Contractors Ltd, on a project to upgrade 75 homes in the South West on our National Housing Prime contract. Prior to this project starting, in two separate projects, the homes had been upgraded with new roofs and the garages were given new roofs and doors which added to the quality of the homes.

The project, in Shipton Bellinger, will be beneficial to combating damp and mould issues and is due to be completed by the end of March 2018. Elizabeth Roberts, Project Manager, is working closely with the DIO, our supply chain and the Garrison, who are helpful and fully supporting all aspects of the project. The new homes will also be upgraded with new windows, doors, kitchens and bathrooms as well as damp proof treatment and if necessary, loft insulation brought up to 270mm. The homes have also been repointed and redecorated, with carpets and vinyl being replaced throughout. New sheds with electricity supply and lighting have been also been built.

New heating systems and heat recovery systems have been installed to ensure that properties are kept moisture free preventing damp issues. This system will take warm moist air from inside the properties, holding the warmth but removing the moisture. Fresh air is then brought into the system, warmed by the retained heat and distributed throughout the home. 61 of the homes have been insulated improving the appearance of the street and more importantly, improving the comfort of the families living there.

Families were moved temporarily in order for the works to go ahead smoothly and quickly. It was a big upheaval but they were good natured about it and now most people who have moved in to the refurbished homes are really happy. Mrs Pullen has recently moved back and said, “I just want to say thank you so much for all your help and support since the summer you have moved me from a damp home into a lovely new home which is so nice and done with much better quality than we have seen in Army houses before.

They are so much warmer and fresh feeling. We also have had such a great help and time from all the builders over the last few months and any problems have been resolved very quickly. Our move was handled very efficiently and without any need for me to do anything. Thank you for moving us into such a home.”
